You may, like many of us, measure productivity by how busy you are. The busier you are, the more productive you may feel – but is that necessarily correct?
The answer is “No”.
You should measure productivity by how much you accomplish.
If you measure productivity by how busy you are (or feel), you may work longer hours, move deadlines around and multitask. These strategies may provide you with some short-term relief, but are not sustainable in the longer term. They can lead to high levels of stress, disrupted personal life and, eventually, poor productivity.
It is far better to learn how to work intelligently and to use leverage to achieve more with your time and resources. This will increase your productivity – and help you find extra time to do other things.
Sometimes it is better to stand back and think. You will often find a better way. Discussing your situation with someone with experience of similar problems can also be a tremendous help.
