There are loads of songs about love and relationships but relatively few about the relationship we love to hate – tax. We had a think and came up with these happy ditties.

“Taxman” – The Beatles. “There’s one for you. 19 for me” says the tax collector in this 1966 song.
“Sunny Afternoon” – The Kinks. “The taxman’s taken all my dough”
“Success Story” – The Who. “I’ve gotta play some one-night stands. Six for the taxman and one for the band”.
The above are from the 60s when the highest rate of income tax was 91.5%. No wonder many groups left the UK to live abroad.
“Me and the IRS” – Johnny Paycheck. Not well known in the UK this tells the IRS (USA tax authority) to take their tax returns and “shove ‘em!!
“1040 Blues” – Robert Cray. Includes the lyric, “I hate taxes”. He says it was tongue-in-cheek” but a sentiment probably echoed by many people.
“Inner City Blues” – Marvin Gaye. Marvin sang “Bad breaks, set backs. Natural fact is, I can’t pay my taxes”.
“Taxman, Mr Thief” – Cheap Trick. Includes the line “Taxman: hates you, loves your money”.
“Ain’t we got fun” – Peggy Lee. “Tax collector’s getting closer …….”
“The big royalty cheque” – Van Morrison. Van the Man says, “But you can’t beat the tax man”
Perhaps we should organise a dance featuring only songs about tax? Would many of you attend?
